History

Shortly after Dragon’s induction into the police force, William Jonson quickly became one of the hero’s best friends. William’s detective skills, good humor, pleasant nature and his usefulness in a fight also made him one of the force’s most popular members. All of these skills did not gain the one thing he desired, the affections of Rita Medermade.

William spent years quietly longing after Rita, saving her life on more than one occasion when superhumans were on a rampage. After Dragon had a one night stand with Rita, William finally plucked up the courage to ask her out on a date, worrying that he may lose the opportunity forever otherwise. The pair soon became lovers when the Martians attacked, acting on their mutual affection for one another.

The pair fled Chicago when William’s brother Ralph was released from prison, having served eighteen years for the murder of their parents. Ralph desired revenge for this perceived betrayal and went gunning for the couple. The hiding duo only returned home when Dragon was reported as having arrived back home in Chicago.

The Vicious Circle was being torn apart by a civil war where Dragon found himself being atomized from a spell cast by Abner Cadaver. William Jonson intervened and took down the undead mystic, unknowingly causing the dispersed Dragon’s essence to take up residence in his body. William and Dragon would share this body and worked together to rescue Rita when she was abducted by Ralph Jonson, resulting in Ralph’s death at the hands of DarkLord.

William had been shot in the head by his brother and was presumed dead when Dragon could not detect his presence in their shared mind any longer. Fon~Ti restored the pair to normal and William was free to finally marry Rita who was now pregnant. The newlyweds’ twins were conceived when Dragon’s essence was within William’s body. This marked them as targets for the Covenant of the Sword who abducted the pair as part of their plans for the future regarding a superhuman army.

A rescue mission was carried out by a number of heroes that saw the twins returned to their parents. Universo attacked the Earth a couple of years later and William’s children were taken under the care of WildStar and his companions. They fled through a portal into Dimension-X where they remained for several years.

When CyberFace conquered Earth, William opted to leave the scattered Chicago Police Department. He took the Star costume out of storage and adopted the role of the vigilante, defending innocents in the devastated city of Chicago. Star would later help Dragon in restoring Rita to normal size after she had been left in a gigantic state by a Martian weapon.

After the world had been liberated, Chicago underwent massive reconstruction but a region of the city remained in a terrible state. This “Danger Zone” was a lawless place and Star opted to remain behind to defend those that still lived there. Rita adopted a costume of her own and when latent growing powers were activated, she became his partner, Red Giant.

Star and Red Giant fought crime for a number of years but when Rita caused the deaths of dozens of villains in a fit of rage, brought on by taking on too large a form, she wished to retire from heroics. William tried to convince her otherwise but when Mark and Peter Jonson emerged from Dimension-X, he changed his mind so that Rita and he could raise their twin sons without the danger of fighting super-freaks. William still returns to action as Star on rare occasions if the need arises. He helped fight off the Tyrraneans during their invasion of Earth as well as fighting Mako when Mako went on a rampage.

He is later the best man at Paul Dragon’s wedding.
