History

Helen Black was a young girl that was one of the many victims of Arachnid that had been webbed up in Chicago’s sewer systems. Although all of these other people were dead, after Dragon had defeated Arachnid, he heard someone still breathing. Helen was released and developed an infatuation with Dragon from then on.

Many years later, Helen Black became the landlady of an apartment block where Gertie Funt lived. This woman was the best friend of Dragon’s wife Jennifer and had been obsessed with finding a method to cure her recently paralysed friend Gertie’s research was plastered all over her apartment’s wall and was discovered by Dragon and Helen when he went to visit her in an effort to locate his missing wife.

Not long after this discovery, Helen gained shape-shifting abilities (presumably using the research gathered by Gertie) and had become transformed so that her physical attributes now resembled Dragon. A new guise of Mutation was created and the woman set about finally being with the man she had loved since a young age.

Mutation attempted to seduce Dragon before attacking him, pretending that she was actually his estranged wife. This ruse was instantly seen through and Mutation soon suffered defeat at Dragon’s hands, getting sent to Stronghold Penitentiary to serve a prison sentence.

After a year or so of imprisonment, Mutation broke free and tried to confront Dragon once more. Unfortunately for her, Dragon had reverted back to his original Emperor Kurr persona and possessed none of his alter ego’s mercy. He struck down Mutation which left her injured. She was gathered up by the Vicious Circle but was handed over to the authorities, escaping once more from their custody. Mutation then posed as Amy Belcher, newly returned to the Chicago Police Department. She used this disguise to locate the child of the incarcerated Battleaxe and deceased Dark Dragon, Battle Dragon. Mutation then took the child into her care and fled.

Mutation begins to impersonate Jennifer Dragon again and seeks refugee with Jennifer’s brothers, Animal and Bloop. The feel that is something is not right, but before they can come to a proper conclusion they are attacked by Battleaxe who is seeking her child. Mutation abandons her Jennifer disguise and begins to fight Battleaxe. However, she is touched by Negate and reverts into the form of two women, Gertie Funk and Helen Black. It is revealed that both searched out the Power Broker who combined the two into being, Mutation. Gertie, is murdered by Battle Axe, and the fate of Helen Black remains uncertain.
